Urban Survival - Disaster Preparedness

Urban survival is the scariest kind, because you are not just facing the quiet isolation of the mountains the desert or forest-you are facing desperate masses of humanity who are convinced they are in dire need. Urban survival is a skill, and like any skill it must be learned. Stay alert, stay mobile, be ready to run, but better yet, be prepared with knowledge to survive and possibly thrive in an urban disaster in your own home and neighborhood. Urban survival is about promoting sustainable living within ones urban environment; the principals of organic food production, alternative energy and minimizing the use of non-renewable resources and the reuse or recycling of everything possible. The following general information on starting out in urban survival is based on personal experience and research. You'll begin to understand that preparing for a year of urban survival is much more than several hundred pounds of dry food. But with the proper information and the will to start preparing yourself and family, you will find it is not as tedious or expensive as you may think.

Just as you would with wilderness survival preparation, you must begin by making a list of possible scenarios that you could experience in your urban area. Once you have made a list of possible urban survival situations, make a list of survival supplies and skills you might need in each scenario. Know how to use those survival supplies. No matter where you live or how you live, having a good survival kit is an absolute must. With the threats of terrorist attack, natural disaster, economic collapse, or a pandemic, you need to have a survival plan in place quickly that is inexpensive and doesn't depend on relocating or you being around as the leader in the unfortunate event that you become a casualty. Good survival training and preparation for you and your family significantly increases the odds in your favor.

If you find yourself in a survival situation, you must make up your mind that you are going to survive. Your ability to think clearly and react is your most valuable survival skill in a situation, or any undesirable situation for that matter. In situations such as flooding and power outages, contaminated water may be your only source, learn how to purify your water. An Urban Survival course or book will help prepare you and your family for these types of emergency situations. Beyond personal supplies, surviving an ugly urban situation depends a lot on how you choose to behave. If we take into account the idea that of most people, a good 90% will not be prepared for a survival situation. So we can assume that there will be a scavenging rush on most well known sources of survival necessities.

Having these necessities before hand will keep you out of this horde of looting and stealing sea of desperation. Crime will only lead to destruction and will eventually undermine your ability to survive. Being able to take care of yourself and family will not only keep you out of the hordes. It will also prevent you and your family from becoming refugees which is not desirable in the least as you will lose all control, your freedom and most likely not fair very well. Just think of the Kingdome in New Orleans post Katrina.

The entire family being part of the preparation and planning is the key to surviving comfortably during emergencies and disasters. Everyone in the family should take a class on basic self defense, and firearm safety. Shut your fuse box off for a few days over the weekend and your kids will provide a list a mile long of things they think they need. After you've wittled down their list make your list of the things you absolutely can't do without and start there. Food for your family, pets and maintaining some piece of your lifestyle for sanity, you will soon begin to understand the magnitude of survival in a place with no power, water or other services. By hoping for the best but preparing for the worst you will assure yourself and your family a reasonable chance for success in an unreasonable situation.

I have read many books on this subject. Most, while thorough, provide what seems to be an endless list of expensive supplies and even more expensive training. I have recently purchased an inexpensive Urban Survival Program that does not overwhelm, but instead provides all necessary information with common sense, clear direction and solid advice on obtaining supplies and training in a methodical manner. A helpful thing also is how the writer gives advice on getting your family on board, without making you look like a doomsayer.
